Haunting on the Peninsula
Temporarily Closed - On June 16, 1932, Stephen Marshall, his wife, Elizabeth Marshall and their two children Frank and Laura loaded up their Ford Coupe and left their land in New Mexico to head west to settle near the coast of California in the city known today as Costa Mesa. 5 days later, the family’s car was found in an area of Southern Riverside, known as Corona but not one member of the family was found near their car. Legend has it that after the car broke down the family went to search for help by foot. They ventured through the swampy marsh located at the foot of what became the Cleveland National Forest and stumbled upon the Lewis Bros traveling circus. Everything seemed to be going well until Stephen and Elizabeth started noticing things….there was something wrong with Jerry the clown…his painted on smile was a little to uncomfortable for the Marshalls’. Stephen gathered up his family and suggested they leave right away to continue to look for help. Jerry didn’t like strangers and felt that it was his duty to eliminate the Marshalls. Jerry chased the Marshalls out of the fairgrounds into the dark, dreary woods where it is believed that he eventually caught them. Frank’s body was found mutilated. Stephen and Elizabeth’s bodies were recovered near the River Bottom Cemetery. Years later Jerry was caught and charged for the murders of the Marshall Family….he was sentenced to death by electrocution. The authorities told Jerry that if he gave them information as to the whereabouts of Laura’s body they would give him a stay of execution and allow him to live out a life sentence. Jerry refused and to this day, no one knows what happened to Laura. It is said that Laura’s ghost has been spotted roaming from the site of where the family’s car broke down all the way to where her parents bodies were found…no one knows why or what she’s doing but there’s a very uncomfortable feeling whenever she is spotted. Jerry’s story is a little more suspicious, Jerry’s spirit has been spotted at the scene of the Lewis Bros traveling circus’ final performance, where it is said that he is looking for another family to bring to hell with him.
