In 1595 wordt de Pagnevaart al vermeld onder de naam Paedsievaart, Paesievaart en Pagievaert. Allemaal verbasteringen van Spagnevaart omdat er gedacht werd dat hier resten van een oud Spaans oorlogsschip in de bodem zouden zitten. Een paar honderd jaar later werd er een serieuze poging ondernomen om die resten te vinden en om tevens turf te winnen. De arbeiders die dit klusje mochten klaren noemden ze de Turfstekers… Schatten en rijkdommen Een van hen was Willem Hendriks, een arbeider op leeftijd die onder zeer slechte omstandigheden in de Pagnevaart aan het werk was. Hem werd door de ploegbaas verteld dat het allemaal om de goede kwaliteit turf ging maar Willem wist wel beter… Het ging maar om één ding. Zoeken naar waardevolle schatten en rijkdommen afkomstig van het oude Spaanse oorlogsschip! Eén ding was zeker, mocht hij waardevolle dingen vinden dan zou hij er alles aan doen om het niet in handen te laten vallen van die slavendrijvers!
