El éxito del libro llevó a la grabación de la película en 1973 y supuso un antes y un después para el cine de terror, sigue siendo hasta día de hoy, una de las películas de culto del género. Multitud de sucesos paranormales y muertes inexplicables tuvieron lugar durante el rodaje y posteriormente.
