Osnabrück, 25. August 1859. Die Cholera breitet sich epidemieartig in der Stadt aus und immer mehr Menschen infizieren sich mit Bakterien. Einige leiden sogar an einem so genannten Nervenfieber. Aus der Not heraus wird ein altes Dechantenhaus der Kirche durch eine großzügige Spende zu einem Krankenhaus umfunktioniert. Drei Schwestern des Boromäus Ordens aus Trier erklären sich bereit das Krankenhaus zu besetzen. Am 20. August erreicht der erste Patient das Marienhospital. Die Schwestern nehmen sofort die Behandlung auf, doch der Patient scheint bereits nach 3 Tagen unheilbar zu sein. Er verhält sich äußerst merkwürdig und betont immer wieder es würde dort spuken. Die Schwestern sind mit diesem Patienten überfordert und fordern Hilfe an. Eine Gruppe von Verfechtern der Wissenschaft macht sich auf den Weg, um das Geheimnis des Patienten zu lüften. Während bis dahin nur Frauen aus der Unterschicht der Hexerei bezichtigt wurden, gab es im Laufe des Monats Juli erstmals einen Fall, bei dem eine Frau nicht aus der so genannten unteren Volksschicht kam. Während eines noch laufenden Prozesses gegen die Apothekersfrau Anna Ameldung aus Osnabrück, kommt ein Jura-Student dem Verdacht näher es könnte sich hier um Unschuld handeln. Der Virtuose Student Jakob, ist sich sicher, dass in diesem Fall etwas nicht stimmt. Um vor Rat und Bürgermeister Dr. Wilhelm Peltzer kein Aufsehen zu erregen, schickt er seine völlig unwissenden und unscheinbaren Erstsemester Studenten zu dem Haus der Anna A., um dort nach Beweisen zu suchen und ihre Unschuld zu beweisen.
